HIP HOP OFFICIAL ARTIST OF THE WEEK CONTEST: Week 1 Matchups

Thanks to everyone who entered our first ever Artist of the Week Contest. We received over 70 submissions and had to narrow it down to the Top 16. Trust me, it wasn’t easy. We almost had a few fist fights break out trying to agree on the final selections. If you didn’t make the cut, it means I probably didn’t punch hard enough. But don’t worry, we’ll hopefully have another contest in the future. But until then, these are the Top 16 who made it to the first round.

Please take a listen to the songs and vote on the eight match-ups. The winners from each pairing will advance to the next round. Voting for Round 1 closes on Sunday night at 11:59 PM. You can vote as many times you want, so tell your friends. Tell you friends to tell their friends. Let your voice be heard.

We have teamed up with the homies over at iLLRoots.com and MySpace Hip-Hop who are gonna to co-sponsor this contest for us. Ill Roots is going to sponsor the winner’s next mixtape/project and have it featured on their site, which happens to be one the biggest rap blogs on the planet. That’s a great look. Shout out to Hallway Jay. The winners will also be crowned the Hip Hop Official Artist of the Week, and have an exclusive feature on them produced by HHO that will be transmitted around the globe for the world to see. The segment will be featured on MySpace Hip Hop, and promoted through their site as well. So let’s get it crackin..

HONESTLY I FEEL THIS CONTEST WAS UNFAIR FROM THE BEGINNING I HOPE THEY CHANGE THIS “UNLIMITED VOTE” THING

I GOT A FEELN “CERTAIN EMCEEZ” IS BOOSTIN THEY VOTES UP!!!

TILL ITS FIXED I AM DISSAPOINTED IN THIS CONTEST.

Comment by tekneek — July 8, 2009 @ 8:36 am

i feel the same..i mean at first i was very trigger happy as far hearing bout the unlimited votes.. but im also fortunate to have a great fanbase(back home and other locations)i personally think there is alot of good talent in this comp.and one thing is for sure this shouldnt make or break an artist but it is great for promo.GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE NO-MATTER-WHAT!

Comment by JAHPAN — July 8, 2009 @ 9:58 am

cool shit

Comment by Anonymous — July 8, 2009 @ 11:58 am

It’s definitely working. I just tried to vote in that poll and had no problem. Maybe try and refresh then vote again. Let us know what happens.

Comment by Hip Hop Official — July 8, 2009 @ 12:14 pm

I agree with Jahpan. This contest is really about getting the word to your fanbase and getting them to hit the site and vote. Everyone here has something to offer but at the same time we’re all playing on the same field. Anything with votes is a popularity contest no matter how you cut it. Every artist here is getting some shine and that’s a good thing. It’ll be interesting to see how this develops and who wins.

Comment by Rob Rush — July 8, 2009 @ 1:29 pm

If it’s unlimited voting per IP this is an inaccurate way of seeing who won. It is very easy to write or download a program that perform a simple task such as…vote for an MC over and over and over. One vote per IP is a much better way of finding out who the public was feelin.

I agree with above. This contest isn’t a battle of artistic quality.. This system of voting is biased towards legit voters. They should charge a dollar per vote in order to reduce unfair mass clicking.

Comment by jspctacular — July 8, 2009 @ 2:42 pm

Ya’ll need to stop complaining.
It’s easier this way. Its easier for fans. If u think other mcs are voting for themselves , then vote for yourselves as many times as possible. Stop complaining. Step your marketing game up.

Comment by Knowledge — July 8, 2009 @ 3:57 pm

seems like its a little to late to change the voting system after all the ballot stuffing that went down already.

Comment by Tony — July 8, 2009 @ 4:36 pm

I think some people need to stop complaining about losing. I think the votes might have been over exaggerated a bit. But so what. If your shit was better it would show.

out of all the contestants the ones im really feeling are The Concrete Saints and Jahpan them two right there outside the competition seam to me like they will have the most sucess. But then again this is only my point of view. Not to knock everyone else but hopefully Jahpan And The Concrete Saints make it down the stretch. One to hear Jahpan showcase himself which im intereasted to hear. And two The Concrete Saints are coming with that raw ass sound that is undenialble. This is real hiphop!! thank you HHO

remember to keep voting for yourself, especially if u don’t work and can sit at home all day and do so.

Comment by jon — July 9, 2009 @ 9:36 am

I liked most of the trax. Some of the music were samples of samples taken from music back in the 60’s. Yeah I’m that old; doing music over forty years. I look for originality in an artist, being that I’m a composer/musician/songwriter myself. Anyone can be a copycat. However, coming out with what’s inside of you and doing original music is the key to an artist truly becoming successful. Rob Rush sounded like a slowed-down version of Jr. Walker & The All Stars and Will Smith w/ Jazzy Jeff.

Comment by Revolutionary Phoenix aka Big A — July 9, 2009 @ 11:24 am

I think changing the contest rules in the middle of a round is pretty weak. I think unlimited voting is wasn’t the best idea but changing that in the middle of a round is not right for those who had their oponent stuffing the ballot. I think that shouldve been handled in the next round

Comment by Anonymous — July 9, 2009 @ 12:44 pm

I THINK EVERRRRYONE SHOULD JUST WIN ..LOL TO BE HONEST AND THIS IS COMING FROM SOMEONE WHO IS NOT FEELING THE “NEW WAVE” OF MOST ARTIST COMING OUT NOWADAYS..I CANT RECALL ANYONE ON HERE WHO DIDNT HAVE SOMEWHAT TANGIBLE MUSIC..I WOULDNT SAY ITS ALL GREAT BUT THIS LIST IS FULL OF TALENT..I HAVE LISTENED TO EVERYONE AND EVEN DID SOME SEARCHING FOR MORE OF THEY WORK AND I WILL ADMIT THIS LIST IS FULL OF GREAT ARTIST..THERE IS A DIFFERENT CHARACTER IN ALL OF EM..SOME MAY HAVE A BIGGER PUSH OR A HARD WORKING MACHINE TO SUPPORT EM BUT I WOULDNT MIND WORKING WITH EACH ONE……WE SHOULD JUST DO A HUGE SHOWCASE WITH THIS ROSTER AND GIVE ALL THE FANS A GREAT SHOW……THIS IS NOT THE END..WELL I CAN ONLY SPEAK FOR MYSELF BUT I WOULD DEFF GIVE MY PROPS TO EACH AND EVERYONE OF YALL..EVEN THE FANS FOR KEEPING IT HONEST…….OUR CULTURE FUCKING RULES

PEACE-JAHPAN

Frankie Knuckles

There is some great music in this tournament and its a great way for artist to get exposure. The REC LEAGUE (routinefly.com) is well represented with 2 artist getting their shine on, Rob Rush and Richie Cunning both bring some heat. As a fan of the REC LEAGUE I have came here to shoe love but was introduced to a lot of new artist and that works both ways so big ups to hiphopoffical .com for putting this together.

As far as the voting, I’m sure hiphopoffical.com wants as much traffic as possible so I think 1 vote per IP per day is fair for all artist and well direct the most traffic to the site.

How this “artist of the week” matchup thing is set up is completely WACK. Once it becomes a matter of GOOD music and creativity and not a popularity contest, your polls don’t mean shit. Peace!

Comment by RICK SAID IT — July 13, 2009 @ 8:09 pm

Are the Concrete Saints really that good or are their fans really that retarded?

Comment by jus curious... — July 13, 2009 @ 8:19 pm

Or is it that Jus Curious is just a hater that people are feeling hot!!’ music. Mad love for (SSA) it’s a movement. If you not feeling it step aside then and watch it pass you up. Go Concrete!!!!
